An extremely game Lauren Ambrose plays Dorothy “Dotty” Turner, a local TV reporter so lost in grief that her loved ones give her a plastic (and extremely creepy) doll to use as a transitional object-one that brings her back from a near catatonic state.

Shyamalan executive-produces Servant, which comes from creator and writer Tony Basgallop ( Inside Man, What Remains). So while I can’t tell you precisely why that croquembouche made me squeal in my chair, I do hope you’ll believe me when I say it would be a shame for you to miss it. For all of the plot’s shortcomings, moment-to-moment Servant is a delight with a surprising amount of laughs to share. That said, however, its greatest asset it its comedy. The entire show is a parade of unevenly achieved bait-and-switches that are clearly designed to keep us guessing but often fall short. The show’s snail-like pace is frustrating enough to drive even the most patient viewer away-especially with episodes set to air weekly. Why?
